Dear Subscriber

Well, at last the snow arrived and the chickens did a double take when they saw the white stuff! They have laid quite well through the short winter days with Dorcas being the most prolific and laying her white egg nearly every day.Doreen is a close second although she likes to lay her speckled brown egg on the paper sacks in the shed given half a chance! Gloria,my rainbow Columbine started laying in January and her eggs are a pale green. Dorothy has only just matured and has laid about three fawn coloured eggs so far. The last two girls are young and have settled in well to the life by the river.

Barkis and I have been out for a walk each day, whatever the weather, and really enjoy the fresh air. It was beautiful by the lakes when the snow was on the ground and although it is harder to trudge through the winter mud or snow it is lovely to see nature at its best.

With the longer daylight hours we are able to spend more time outside preparing the soil for planting, clearing the leaves and pruning the plants ready for the growth spurt in the spring. The kitchen waste over the past year has produced good compost both in the composter and the wormery. The large composters have had garden waste and the bedding from both the chicken and duck houses so all good stuff!

When I look around and see the dog, chickens and ducks all in harmony together it pleases me greatly. We are indeed fortunate to have such a peaceful environment. The river is a timeless presence and we feel privileged to be part of it. Lindsay
