Panacea News Letter 1

Dear Subscriber

The Easter holidays arrived and so did three chickens. We decided to call them Doris,Doreen and Dorcas, one is a copper colour, one blackish and one white. They are hybrid hens which means they are crossbreeds and are therefore better for egg laying than pure breeds. All hybrids derive from the Rhode Island Reds and are crossed with others eg. the Plymouth Rock

This arrival means that currently residing on the plot are the three chickens and Blanche,Gervaise and Donald the three ducks that have decided to dominate the area. The other four ducks are still out on the river being independent. They are Martha,Will,Alfie and Baxter.Reece, who last year enjoyed the hatching of the ducklings, arrived after the Easter break and immediately decided to join the hens in the henhouse.

Barkis is very sensible and interested in all that goes on.He has been used to the ducks as they have been with us since hatching last year,so he virtually ignores them. The hens offer more of a fascination and their enthusiasm gets Barkis quite excited!

Jake has returned after Easter and has been working on whittling a stick, burning patterns onto it with a pyrography iron and stitching a sheath for it out of canvas.Barkis has been helping,of course! Lindsay Nash
